Austin HealthMate (HM) Air Cleaners use a 4 phase filtering system.
- A large outer filter traps the large airborne particles, lint and pet hair.
- The pre-filter (Permafilt™) traps smaller particles that have passed through the outer filter. These initial layers add life to the carbon and HEPA layers.
- Pounds of granular activated carbon and zeolite adsorbs odors and gasses.
(PLUS units Carbon has been specially treated with potassium iodide - a special compound that enhances the adsorbtion of thousands of odors and gases. HEGA units have Strategically placed Military Grade Carbon Cloth which has a surface adsorption area equal to at least 15 pounds carbon. (Please Note: The National Sleep Foundation Bedroom Air Cleaner has BOTH 15 Pounds of Granular carbon AND the HEGA Carbon cloth filter!)
- Finally, True Medical HEPA filter removes 99.97% of all airborne particles as small as 0.3 microns from the air that flows through it.

| Common Question: "Many companies state a certain number of years for their filters such as their HEPA is for 5 Years. Your systems always show things like "3 to 5 years depending upon environment used in." Who is right?" Answer:
We are simply being more truthful about the life of filters. If you have a HEPA filter in areas where there is NO Cigarette Smoke, NO Cigar or Pipe Smoke or NO pets in the environment, the HEPA filter and Carbon will last the longest. When you get into situations where there are Pets and/or Smokers in the environment it is conceivable to say that this extra air pollution such as pet dander, smoke particles, smoke gases and odors will shorten the life of the filters in an air cleaner. The HEPA and Carbon filters in air cleaners can only capture and adsorb so much. Most ALL advertised filter ratings are based on environments with NO pets and NO smokers. Instead of us giving you the best case scenario of filter life, we give a High pollution and a Low pollution rating which we feel is more honest and usable info for the consumer to know. We receive many calls from consumers who have purchased other companies air cleaners with a rating of 5 years asking us why it only lasted 2 or 3 years. We almost always find out that there is a Pet and/or Cigarette smoker in their environment. These consumers are also upset because they purchased the product based on a 5 year life of the filter. For anyone to say that a filter will last a specific time under ANY and ALL environment situations, to us, is not being really truthful.
